Below is a tentative itinerary for the USS Ajax AR-6 Reunion Association 2012 reunion in Waterloo, Iowa. Rates include roundtrip motor coach transportation from the Ramada Inn to the tour destination, admissions where necessary. WE WILL HAVE ONE MOTOR COACH WITH A WHEELCHAIR LIFT. Tour the John Deere Factory. Waterloo is home of the John Deere Tractor & the only location in North America that manufactures the large 7000, 8000, & 9000 series tractor. View a 15 minute film on the history of John Deere, take a narrated trolley ride through the manufacturing plant, and shop at the Deere Crossing Gift Shop. Rate per person $30.00 TUESDAY, JUNE 12, 2012: Depart the Ramada Inn 9:00 AM for a one-hour drive to the Amana Colonies for shopping, food and entertainment, sampling beer and wine, strolling the villages and trails or just relaxing in the atmosphere of the German culture that was brought to America. A National Historic Landmark and one of America’s longest-lived communal societies since 1855, these seven villages of German descent offer a variety of restaurants, woolen mills, unique gift shops, and wineries. Grout Museum of History & Science - The "Engine of the Heartland" exhibit reviews the history of industry in our area. Waterloo was home to at least 10 automobile manufacturing companies in the early 1900's, automobiles which included the Dart and the Maytag. You have the opportunity to view the evolution of Waterloo from a small county-seat town into a Midwest industrial center. Machines of transportation and power are featured, along with agri-production, food processing, farm implement manufacturing, and printing. Interactive element and compelling displays allow visitors to explore the events and texture of the area and the people that make up the Engine of the Heartland.
